A long, long time ago on a blog not very far away, I said I was getting my first short story – After the Bombs published. The company who was going to publish this fabled story tragically folded and I was left with a story that my publisher and I had worked on for many, many hours.

I’ve tried to find the right place for it but:
a) it’s too long
b) it’s too violent and
c) it’s too weird
for any traditional sci fi publishers. So, I’m presenting this story here, on my blog.

Now, just to forewarn you, this story is not for the faint of heart. There is cannibalism, death and allusions to rape in this story. I might be making it sound worse than it is, but I want to stress that this story is for adult eyes only.

It is also very feminist and was inspired in part by The Shore of Women by Pamela Sargent.

So, for those of you who have read all the warnings, but still wish to dip in and find out what this story is all about, I give you After the Bombs. Let me know what you think.

Just so everyone can keep track, so far I have submitted two stories to three separate publications. All have been rejected . Here’s the list:

- The Day the Sun Went Out: A Sci Fi short about a lunar eclipse that gets stuck, aliens and when customer service goes horribly wrong.

I sent this to the Writer’s of the Future contest and the Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine.

- District Z: Set in a polluted earth – the human race is forced to live in computer-controlled domes. An investigator encounters artificial intelligence, bent on killing off people, one by one.

I sent this one to Analog Science Fiction and Fact Magazine.

I’m not here to gripe about getting rejected. In fact, I figured my first few tries would get rejected and wasn’t sure how I’d feel. I felt a little upset at first, unable to see what’s wrong with my work. Now I think I want someone really objective to review it and help me edit my stories. Because, I think they’re entertaining and interesting – so why didn’t the magazine’s and contest see it that way? So, I’m on the hunt for people who want to read my work and get nothing out of it but the pleasure of helping me. Pretty please?

Also, I’ve decided after much deliberation to submit my short story After the Bombs to Writer’s of the Future. I wasn’t going to, as there is some graphic content, but I guess if they don’t like it, the worst they can say is “It’s too graphic”. If it doesn’t win, I may try my hand at querying a couple of magazines, but ultimately I feel kind of guilty doing that, since my editor at Fiction Reborn helped me develop it so much. I wish there was some way she could get some credit besides my undying thanks and gratitude. Any ideas people?

So, I’ll be shopping my short story manuscript around. If anyone has any good ideas about where I should look to get it published, let me know!

(And if you have no idea what I’m talking about, read the synopsis here)

I’m currently working on a novel, a couple other short stories (one is for Brianna) and whatever other writing tasks I can get my greedy paws on. I have to say, if anyone wanted to get into fiction writing (or nonfiction writing) because it seemed like an easy money maker, they need to think again. It’s pretty intense. I’m working long hours on three different jobs – one of which is fiction writing – and doing some school. I have so much respect for artists like Poe or Van Gogh, who never made it big in their lifetime, but were complete freaking geniuses.

Anyway, I’ve got to get back to work (yes, on Memorial Day). I’ll keep you updated on my latest and greatest stuff.
