About Julia Scott-Douglas
I am a fiction author – I mostly write Sci Fi/Fantasy and Supernatural. I live in Los Angeles, California, and have lived in California my whole life. A little background info on me:
I come from a family of writers and creative people – my father, Grahame Scott-Douglas, is the culprit behind my love of Sci Fi/Fantasy. I read a lot as a kid and I progressed from reading The Boxcar Children at age nine to reading R.L. Stein’s Fear Street and Christopher Pike when I was twelve. One day I was at the bookstore with my dad (a Crown Books – before they closed down) and he said, “Come over here.” I complied and he lead me to the Adults section of the store. My stomach began twisting and I felt guilty for being there. I wasn’t an adult, I was just twelve! He handed me Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, and said, “You should check this book out, it’s really good.” So I did. He was wrong – it was better than good. It was brilliant. I read the whole book that weekend and when I finished I wanted more.
Now, stepping into a time travel machine to age six(ish), my dad made up stories for me and told them to me every night when I was going to sleep. I would listen with rapt attention, until my eyelids began to droop and he said, “The End”. I asked for the same stories over and over again – so he recorded a tape of them (the height of technology in those days – lol) and I still have it to this day.
Rewind even further – ages four and five. My mom – Sara Louise Kras gave me her favorite children’s books. These were books about magical lands, elephants afraid of mice, princes, princesses, African beasts, seals, mice and more. Each book would take me to another place, somewhere I could see in my head. I was entranced. She shared stories from her own childhood along with books she collected throughout the years. I managed to scrawl all over them in crayon (nice one, Julia), but she eventually forgave me.
Fast forward to several years ago, my mom began taking me to conferences the Society of Children’s Book Writer’s held. These inspired me to write and write about what I knew at the time – kids. My mom’s wonderful children’s books got published, and she continues to write today – and edit my work. She is a constant source of inspiration to me and always keeps me encouraged and writing. She helps me keep my “BIC” – Butt in the Chair.
I also stay inspired by the creative people around me – my stepdad Joe Kras; my stepmom Katie; my handsome and talented boyfriend James; my stepsiblings Monty, Greg, Jason, Rachel and Jennifer; my smart and sophisticated cousins and my friends who keep my life fun. When I began writing – I did it because I enjoyed it. I enjoyed putting down the stories in my head. I loved writing as an activity for self exploration and escapism. Then, I realized that I was writing for other people too. I was writing for you.
I hope you enjoy what I write. I hope you also let me know what you particularly like or dislike. I think it’s important for me to know all opinions – if I didn’t, I’d have a noninteractive website. Please keep me updated about yourself. I am interested in what I write, but I am more interested in what you, the reader, have to say.

Hi Ms. Scott Davis,

Quillr’s Mashed Up Media Tells Interactive Page Turner
Online multi-sensory storytelling grabs eyeballs.
SIDNEY, BC — Mystery novelist Nicola Furlong is turning publishing heads with the release of her controversial suspense Here Ends the Beginning. Using a unique, online storytelling platform, called a Quillr, Furlong’s combination of mashed up media offers a cool and innovative experience. Possibly the “…future of content,” suggests Joe Wikert of Publishing 2020 Blog.
Using an “…amalgam of text, audio, video and still images…they have created their own TV-style adaptation,” says Mathew Ingram of the Globe and Mail. “…something completely different – and brilliant,” comments Tyler Reed in Scholastic Blogspot.
“A Quillr is not a book,” clarifies Glynne Turner, the creator of the concept. “It’s an experience where the text comes to life through video clips and photographs of actors recreating the characters and scenes, and reading is enhanced by music and sound effects.”
The platform’s unique website triumphs over concerns regarding online reading. “I’m very impressed and interested,” said Nancy Cardin, Vancouver Island Regional Library. “I loved the graphics and music…it was like a mini-movie and the colors and fonts were easy on the eyes, especially after staring at library monitors all day.” Adds Kamir, a Toronto, Ontario teen, “It’s incredibly user-friendly and spices up the traditional reading experience. Not to be missed!”
Here Ends the Beginning is a provocative page turner in which a reclusive, stigmatic pop-star struggles to protect an astounding secret. The first five multi-media chapters are offered for free, with the full forty-three-chapter entertainment package available for $12.95 USD/CAD.
Based on southern Vancouver Island, BC, Team Quillr includes Nicola Furlong, published mystery author and member of the Crime Writers of Canada; Glynne Turner, video director, songwriter and member of the Songwriters Association of Canada; and Charles Ormiston, website designer and director of n-thuse.communications.

Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now. Keep it up!
April 17th, 2010 at 3:52 amAnd according to this article, I totally agree with your opinion, but only this time!
It’s an interesting site, and I’m glad I have spent some time wandering around it. Yay for sick days! I’ll be back to keep an eye on you.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:53 pmMy own site has been rather dormant for a couple years, and because of one stupid thing I wrote in anger and frustration, and someone else read and complained to my boss about, it’s been moved and archived with restricted access (all by my own hand).
If you’d like access to http://aweaponofmassinstruction2.blogspot.com, just go to http://aweaponofmassinstruction.blogspot.com and let me know you want in. You’ll probably enjoy the ride, although there isn’t much fiction in there, the reality is kinda fantastic.
Awesome Arthur! Thanks for the kind words and the link. I’ll check it out when I have an Internet connection beyond my phone.
April 30th, 2010 at 8:22 amHey! Just wanted to chime in. I thoroughly liked your opinion. Keep up the great work.
